Filtration Rating Converter
Three conventions describe the same filter performance and they are not interchangeable in conversation: removal efficiency as a percentage, log reduction value, and beta ratio. Enter one and read the other two, so that a specification written in one convention can be checked against a claim written in another.
The percentage of the challenge particle retained.

The reference points
| Efficiency | Log reduction value | Beta ratio | How it is usually described |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90% | 1 | 10 | The removal level a granted wound-cartridge patent uses to define a micron rating |
| 99% | 2 | 100 | One of the two levels manufacturers have been reported to call absolute |
| 99.9% | 3 | 1,000 | The Water Quality Association definition of an absolute rating |
| 99.98% | 3.7 | 5,000 | The other level manufacturers have been reported to call absolute |
| 99.99% | 4 | 10,000 | Four-log reduction |
Read the spread in that table before you print a rating on a box. A cartridge honestly described as absolute by one convention sits two orders of magnitude away from a cartridge honestly described as absolute by another, and the single-pass liquid filter test standard that once anchored the comparison was withdrawn in 2002. A yarn-wound depth cartridge is nominal-rated, which is why its rating is stated as a nominal micron figure rather than a beta ratio.
